What i've been up to?

The Mandalyn

In the City of Bath lies a rather quiet (or what I thought was quiet) pub.

When I first walked, well stumbled in, I tripped on one of my make up bags, one of the customers came straight up to me and asked if I needed a hand and showed me where the dressing room was, Claire I think her name was, no not the guv Claire. Thank you for that.

I got myself a drink which was very kindly bought for me by the very nice barman and sat down and thought to myself wow what a really nice place. Mandalyn’s has been tastefully decorated, beech floors, bright decor, comfy sofas, rocking chairs, snazzy lighting.

So when it was time for me to start my show I was all hyped up, I had been told about this bar and all good things I may add. When I was introduced the place just went in uproar, I thought to myself is someone else going on as they had never seen me before, I later discovered that there like that with all there acts. The Audience love their cabaret shows. The lovely JP was doing my sound for me and may a say thanks very much JP you did a sterling job. Well what can I say about the audience you guys were great...'laugh I nearly bought a round'.

After doing two encores I finally got to say hello to the Ladies of the house, Lyn and Claire thank you for making me feel so welcome.

So guys if your looking for a truly fun and friendly night out pop down to Mandalyn's.

Mandalyns
13 Fountain Blgs, Lansdown Hill (01225) 425403

Recently overtaking the mantle of Bath's premiere gay pub from the Tap, Mandalyn's is friendly and welcoming, whatever your presuasion. Bright and beautiful, with a stage well trodden by the likes of Miss Kitty Litter, Miss Beverley Ballcrusher and Miss Ambi Dextrous, they hold riotous Sunday night cabaret and regular fundraising events for South West Pride. Bar games abound, happy hour every weekday 3pm-8pm and the range of cocktails is ooh la la.

ITCHY GUIDE BATH:

"

where have all the punters gone?
itchy checks out mandalyns

Mandalyns. If you haven't been yet, then go now.

But it's 6am on a Sunday? Surely they will be shut...

Point taken, but they are open from noon til late 7 days a week.

And what's so special about this place then?

Well apart from the fact that Bath isn't exactly tripping over itself for gay venues, they've done wonders with the place - beech floors, bright decor, comfy sofas, rocking chairs, snazzy lighting...

Decor's all very well, but it'll take more than that to prise me off the barstool at my local...

No problem, they've also got some of the most beautiful boys in the world behind the bar...

Go on...

...and a genuinely welcoming atmosphere even for the less-than-gay punters. A total attitude free zone and the perfect place for a night out whatever your sexuality.

So the kinda place you can just chill in, right?

Well, yes - but it kinda depends which night you visit - there's a quiz on Mondays, Student Night on Tuesdays with plenty of cheap booze and the place is packed on Saturdays when they have live music...

Sounds like my kinda place, but what's the bar like?

Fairly well stocked with everything from beers through alcopops to cocktails... although the cocktail list isn't the longest you'll find in the city, this is the only place you get away with asking for a blowjob over the bar...

Well there is that place in Twerton... oh it's a cocktail, right? What's in it?

We didn't like to ask, but we swallowed it down in one.

Not on an empty stomach, I hope...

Course not, we got ourselves a bite to eat first - they serve food til 9pm and even do a highly recommended roast dinner on a Sunday.

Have you nothing bad to say about this place?

Actually no. Even the bogs were clean. What can i say, these guys have got it right. We'll certainly be back.

So where do i find this oasis of cool?

Lansdown Hill

Aaaaah, so I have to trek for my pint, do I?

Actually no, it's right at the very bottom, you can see it from George Street. So get yourself down there now.

But it's 6am on a Sunday, surely they'll be closed...

We left Oxford and headed off to Bath. By this point, my friends and I were completely stressed from being on a bus for so long and dealing with annoying people and all that. We decided to drop our stuff off and plant ourselves in a pub and have a few drinks, which we did quite well. It was a nice restaurant, too. "The Slug and Lettuce." From there, we went to the gay bar in Bath. This had to be one of the best bars I've been in, handsdown. It was totally a townie bar. The bar tenders knew all the people, knew what they drank, but at the same time, they were totally welcoming to the newbies, like myself. I talked to Mel, one of the lesbian bartenders for a while. She was cool. Met some funny lesbians from Canada, too.

Baths other gay pub, currently the favourite of the LGBT.  Attracts a varied clientele and often has events such as drag acts on Sundays.  And who could miss the karaoke, where we invariably make fools of ourselves!

THE GREAT BATH PUB CRAWL:

"

Mandalyns, Fountain Buildings, Lansdown Road

Probably dating from around the 1770s, and known until recently as the Lansdown Arms. Then came a succession of name changes - the Black Sheep, the Sticky Wicket, the New Lansdown, and now Mandlayn's, an amalgamation of the names of its two licensees. Billed as a pub for all sexualities, its glitzy decor, friendly staff and packed entertainment programme have made this one of Bath's most recent success stories.
